Job Description: Traffic Marshall

Position Overview:

A traffic marshall plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient flow of traffic in various settings, such as construction sites, events, and busy roadways. They are responsible for directing vehicles and pedestrians, implementing traffic management plans, and maintaining a safe environment for all road users. The traffic marshall must have excellent communication skills, be highly observant, and possess a strong understanding of traffic regulations and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and control the movement of vehicles and pedestrians in accordance with traffic management plans and safety guidelines.
  • Use hand signals, flags, and other designated equipment to guide drivers and pedestrians safely through construction sites, events, or other designated areas.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with traffic regulations, including speed limits, parking restrictions, and other relevant rules.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, pedestrians, and other team members to provide clear instructions and ensure a smooth traffic flow.
  • Identify and report any hazards or potential risks to the appropriate personnel, such as road defects, obstructions, or unsafe driving behavior.
  • Assist in the implementation and removal of traffic control devices, such as cones, barriers, and signs, as required.
  • Provide assistance to emergency services, such as guiding emergency vehicles through congested areas or securing the scene of an incident.
  • Maintain accurate records of traffic incidents, including accidents, near misses, and any other relevant information.
  • Attend regular training sessions to stay updated on traffic management techniques, safety procedures, and any changes in traffic regulations.
  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines, ensuring personal protective equipment is worn at all times.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Valid traffic marshall certification or training is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to effectively direct traffic and interact with drivers and pedestrians.
  • Strong knowledge of traffic regulations, safety protocols, and traffic management techniques.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Good physical fitness, as the role may involve standing for long periods and working in various weather conditions.
  • Attention to detail and strong observational skills to identify potential hazards or risks.
  • Ability to work well in a team and follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping purposes.
